Promises to Keep: How Jackie Robinson Changed America
MTA/Red Sox Reading Game featured book 2004
Sharon Robinson is Jackie Robinson’s
daughter as well as an educational consultant for Major League Baseball.
She is the author of two books for young readers: Jackie’s
Nine: Jackie Robinson’s Values to Live By and the 2004 Red
Sox Reading Game featured book, Promises to Keep: How Jackie Robinson
Changed America.
Robinson is also the creator of Breaking
Barriers, an in-school character
education program sponsored by Major League Baseball, The Major League
Baseball Players Association and Scholastic, Inc.
“Promises to Keep is told through the unique perspective of a
daughter who is also an educator. …[S]ince I’ve spent years
speaking with children about my dad, I had the benefit of their natural
curiosity that helped guide me in the telling of the story,” Robinson
said. “And so, Promises to Keep answers basic questions like: Why
1947? Why baseball? and Why Jackie Robinson? and then goes on to talk
about my father’s commitment to the mission and his family. The
book concludes with a glimpse into his legacy.”
