Welcome

Last year, the Boston Bruins worked with the MTA to get kids excited about math through the “Bruins by the Numbers” program. Students who completed an age-appropriate math program with their parents could receive discounted Bruins tickets. This school year, the Boston Bruins are expanding their educational outreach activities with the introduction of Bruins I.C.E. (I Can Excel) School.

The Bruins I.C.E School, which is administered through the team’s community relations office, provides preK-through-eighth-grade teachers and students with curriculum materials that incorporate hockey into lesson plans that fall within Massachusetts framework guidelines. The environment, geography, health/fitness, math, music and reading are among the curriculum areas covered.

Through the I.C.E. School programs, students will have the opportunity to win discounted tickets, autographed Bruins merchandise, school appearances by the Bruins’ mascot, Blades, and school visits by players.

Below are summaries of the Bruins I.C.E. School programs planned for the 2008–2009 school year by curriculum area:

  • MathNets and Numbers is the successor program to Bruins By the Numbers. The program provides teachers in grades K-8 with fun, interactive lesson plans that incorporate hockey and Bruins themes into state math curriculum guidelines. Students who participate in the program can receive one free ticket, with the purchase of one adult ticket, to a pre-selected Boston Bruins home game.
  • GeographyIcing the Globe is targeted toward fourth- and fifth-graders. The Bruins have developed curriculum materials tied to the curriculum frameworks that incorporate geographical information about players’ home countries, as well as different NHL teams throughout North America.
  • Fitness/HealthChara’s Challenge is led by Boston Bruins captain and star defenseman Zdeno Chara. It’s a fitness and wellness program for children in grades K-8 throughout Massachusetts. Participating students receive a Bruins scorecard that lays out activities and goals and helps students track their individual growth and improvement during the program. Students who participate in the program can receive one free ticket, with the purchase of one adult ticket, to a pre-selected Boston Bruins home game.
  • Environment – The Go Green program serves to teach children the importance of learning to live an environmentally friendly lifestyle at an early age. The Bruins have created fun and easy ways for students in grades three through five to become more environmentally friendly. The program teaches students new ways to reduce their effects on our environment, along with the consequences of our current lifestyles on the environment.
